On April 25th, the Carnation Revolution is celebrated. Portugal lived in a dictatorship governed by Salazar, the New State. There was no freedom of expression, religion, thought ... On the night of April 24th to 25th, the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) began the process of throwing down the government. It all started with Paulo de Carvalho's song “E Depois do Adeus” (And After the Goodbye). This song was one of several that had been censored by the government and served as a password for the beginning of the coup. Since the population was on the side of the MFA and few were those who allied with the Government, this coup resulted in only 4 deaths. On April 25th, it was over. Portugal was no longer a dictatorship.
Although Lisbon was the main stage on this day, the Military Force Headquarters, RTP (Radio and Television of Portugal) and RCP (Radio Clube Português) were also taken in Porto by the Military Forces. Despite the attempt by the Minister of Defense to send troops from Braga to advance over Porto, nothing happened since they also had joined the coup.
This revolution is known as the Carnation Revolution because red carnations were distributed by the military who put them on the tip of their rifles.
Every year, the Porto City Council organizes a series of activities to celebrate this important day. This year is no different. Below you can see the program.
