1st (HALF) NEBUP WEEK


The Centre of Biology Students of the University of Porto (NEBUP) is a youth association that brings together the students of the Biology Degrees of the Sciences’ Faculty of the University of Porto (FCUP) and of the Aquatic Sciences of the Biomedical Sciences Institute of Abel Salazar of the University of Porto (ICBAS).
This centre will organize the "1st (HALF) NEBUP WEEK" on 18th, 19th and 20th April, where several lectures and workshops of Biological and Ecological interest will be held, with several speakers from different areas of the environmental sector.
Thus, the first presentation will be on April 18 at 6:00 pm and will be lectured by Nuno Formigo (Biologist, Ecologist and FCUP’s Assistant Professor). Nuno says that "there is a future for humanity on planet Earth and that this future depends on finding a lasting, balanced and sustainable relationship between man and nature”.
Around 6:50 p.m., a lecture on environmental metagenomics will be conducted by Sónia Ferreira (entomologist and researcher at the Center for Research on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO-InBIO) since 2005 and member of the EnvMetaGen project since 2016). She has been involved in several projects related to the taxonomy and conservation of dragonflies, damselflies, locusts, crickets and grasshopers. Currently, her research focuses on the use of molecular markers in the detection and identification of invertebrate species.
Then, at 7:20 pm, another lecture will be given by Dr. Júlio Borlido Santos (Biologist, Science Communicator and head of the i3S Communication Unit).
On April 19, a workshop with João Gonçalo Soutinho, a biologist and coordinator of the VACALOURA.pt Project, will be held between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
The next day, Ana Lomba Correia (soon to be graduated in Law School, Founder and CEO of ATHENA) will present her vision about the world and her desire to "understand how society works and how the individual can go for a bigger picture”.
At 7:20 pm on the same day, it is Dr. Nuno Monteiro (researcher at CIBIO in the Behavioral Ecology group) who will coordinate the lecture. He holds a degree in Biology from FCUP. Due to his work on species of the seahorse family, he is a member of the IUCN Seahorse, Pipefish and Stickleback specialist group.
On April 20, a workshop given by Dr. Áurea Carvalho in the area of ​​Forensic Palinology will be held between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
On the same day, at 6 pm, the speaker will be Ana Leite Oliveira, who has been a principal investigator at the Center for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), School of Biotechnology, Catholic University, where she coordinates the Biomaterials and Biomedical Technology Laboratory) since 2014.
Around 6:50 pm on the same day there will be a lecture dedicated to Forensic Genetics that will be guided by Professor António Amorim (one of the most influential people in the field of genetics in Portugal, Biologist, Director of GABBA and Leader of the Population Genetics & Evolution Research Group, I3S).
Registration is required for workshops and vacancies are limited. For the lectures the entrance is free.
