The almond trees are the plant that announces the spring, beginning to appear at the first half of February.
Although it is popularly known as almond tree this specie’s true name is Prunus dulcis. It is a deciduous tree and it belongs to the family Rosaceae and to the subgenus Amygdalus. The almond, which is the seed of its fruit, is considered as a dried fruit.
The places in Portugal where this species are most frequently found are in the Douro region, in Trás-os-Montes and in Algarve. The almond tree comes from the hot and arid regions of West Asia, which were then replanted in Greece and North Africa during the prehistoric era.
