The flower which smells like chocolate: Akebia Quinata


Oporto’s botanical garden belongs to the University of Porto. The exhibition are open to the public and the space is the best for the ones who have love for plants and animals.
In this garden with around 4 hectares of space, it is possible to find an infinity of species from every parts around the world.
Between this species, you can find akebia quinata, a bindweed plant with five sheets with quick grown.
The bunches of flowers with pink chalices and purple petals have hectar and smell of vanilla and chocolate. a light greenish coriaceous foliage is semi-persistent in mild climates. The period most conducive to flower is April-May.



The akebia needs to be planted next to a vertical support so that it can be grasped. The flowers of this rare and beautiful bindweed show an exotic and exuberant appearance. In addition, its fruits are tasty and edible.
This specie is highly valued in restaurants due to the low supply, since the fruits are small and the plant is rare.
