Porto City has a very rich biodiversity of reptiles and amphibians. We can say that this species are more likely to be seen in Porto then in some natural parks.
Herpetology is still and unknow concept for many people. It is a zoology science area which studies the ecology, the behavior, the physiology and the pathology of reptiles and amphibians.
Snakes, lizards, turtles and sea turtles, tortoises, crocodiles, tuataras and amphisbaenids belong to the reptiles’ group. Therefore in this group we have the vertebrates with thick skin that can be found both in terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Frogs, newts, blind snakes and salamanders are some of the species that make the amphibians group. They are known has vertebrates with thin skin and can be found in humid environments and with sweet water, and they also have the ability to be in the terrestrial environment.
The study of the herpetology is very important for the human life. It is from the study of the toxins and poisons produced by amphibians that we can use them for medical profits to obtain antidotes and medicine beneficial to humans.
There are plenty threats to reptiles and amphibians’ survival. The habitat’s destruction, the use of exotic species and the presence of the Men in the habitat of this species, mainly in the agricultural environment, in addition to climate change, which mainly affect amphibians.

As a way to minimize this study's area appears in 2015 the Portuguese Herpetology Association (APH) which is a non-profit scientific association. The promotion and the development of herpetology’s investigation are the main objectives, as well as influence, disseminate and cooperate with other entities and the general public.
Portugal is one of the countries with the most herpetology’s diversity which is a positive point to our natural patrimony.
