Knowledge and innovation were put to the test this Monday, March 12, in the elimination stage of the most popular communication and science contest in the world, FameLab Porto 2018, which was held at the Galeria da Biodiversidade, Centro de Ciência Viva , associated with the University of Porto, in collaboration with Planetário do Porto and support of National Geographic.
In the competition, created in 2005 by the Cheltenham Science Festival, each competitor has three minutes to demonstrate its ability to communicate the most diverse scientific subjects, using only the word and gestures without any help from audiovisual supports. The evaluation criteria are based on the content of the presentation, its clarity, coherence, charisma of those who are on stage and in the relationship established with the public, using terms that are accessible and easy to understand.
The three semifinalists who won the Porto stage, Carolina Piedade, Fernando Maia and Tiago Costa, will be in the national semifinal, which will take place on Pavilhão do Conhecimento, on March 18, in Lisbon. The winner of the national FameLab Portugal 2018 final will attend the Cheltenham Science Festival in the United Kingdom in June 2018, where he will compete in the FameLab international finals together with the other international winners.
Tiago Costa, one of the semifinalists of this stage, has the study of pain as a basis for his work. He is an internal doctor at the Póvoa de Varzim Hospital and assiduously participates in scientific activities, stating that "the important thing is not only to produce science, but also to write articles that demonstrate that the subject is not directed to a specific group of people, and that this is the best way to bring more people into the world of science. " In addition, he is aware of the great responsibility that both he and his competitors carry, since in a reality where fake news and lack of information are a common issue they remain as scientific disseminators.
Maria João Fonseca, Communications Director of the Museum of Natural History and Science at the University of Porto, participated as organizer and jury of FameLab Porto 2018. "The fact that the qualifiers are open to the public, it causes more people to participate, once events like this should receive more attention because they are concepts applied on a daily basis", says Maria João. This competition brings the research and the population closer, since competitors mediate between scientific articles and primary publications, easy to understand and awake the critical capacity of the people.
FameLab’s promotion is done mainly on the contest platform itself, on social networks and on its official website. It is also essential to mobilize universities, since the event is directed to young researchers and the academic environment is the vehicle to reach potential candidates.
Activities like this one promoted by spaces such as Galeria da Biodiversidade, Centro de Ciência Viva, Planetário do Porto and National Geographic show that science is important at all levels and that we should increasingly take it into account in our lives .
